European Commission Proposes One-Year MDR Delay Because of COVID-19

The European Commission (EC) proposed a one-year delay to the European Union’s Medical Device Regulation (MDR). MDR was due to take effect on May 26,2020. The delay was proposed to give members more time to dedicate to fighting COVID-19. In order for the delay to occur, the European Parliament will have to be in full agreement. Eamonn Hoxey, chair of the AAMI Board of Directors stated: “The reasons for the postponement of the date of application is described purely in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic and the contribution that the medical devices sector pays in the response to these events.”
